Bacalao
Nouvelle Newfoundland Cuisine

Celebrating the cuisine and culture of Newfoundland & Labrador
Bacalao offers a unique and innovative presentation
of the foods, flavours, produce and spirits of our province.

Newfoundland shares its culinary history of enjoying salt cod with many other cultures.
Bacalao (bak-al-OW) is the word used for salt cod (in various spellings and pronunciations)
throughout the Mediterranean. The versatility and much-beloved nature of this time-honoured
staple ingredient is the inspiration for our name and exemplifies
our innovative intrepretation of Newfoundland cuisine.

On the evening of July 7th, my wife and I had our very first experience with dining in this magnificent restaurant. Friends from Ontario were visiting and, wanting to try authentic NL cuisine excluding fast-food fish 'n chips, asked us to recommend a place to eat. We chose Bacalao because we had heard excellent reports and hadn't been there before. What a marvelous eating experience! Our waitress was superb - friendly without being imposing, professional, yet very relaxed, and displaying such knowledge of the restaurant's offerings as to be quite impressive. Service was fast, but yet allowed plenty of time for both digestion and conversation. My wife and both of our companions had the pan-fried cod that evening, while I tried the seafood medley. We all raved at both the taste and the presentation. Entrees were preceded by appetizers which included mussels, cod tongue salad, and a very strange-sounding soup. There were so many mussels that they had to be shared! The desserts were to die for!! We will highly recommend this restaurant to both locals and CFA's, and will definitely be back. Congratulations to all.
